Crowdsourcing A Submission
Remember a while back many of you signed a petition to Save the Capital Connection? It was tabled in Parliament on 28 June and the Transport and Industrial Relations committee has FINALLY decided to do something with it.
The good news is I am able to make a submission to them, first in writing then hopefully in person. The written submission has to be in on Friday December 7 and I’m working on it.
I figure this submission is on behalf of the users of the train and the people of the Manawatu, Horowhenua and Kapiti who don’t want to see it cut. So here’s your chance to say what you think should be in the submission. Either leave a comment here or if you have something lengthy to say, email me on iain.lees-galloway@parliament.govt.nz.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Save the Capital Connection!
I’m sure you will have thought of all of these: Economic benefits including cost-benefit ratio, compared to that for the “road of National (party) significance” running alongside. Perhaps some patronage or other statistics. I remember hearing/reading somewhere that at one time, people were standing or sitting on the floor?
Is there any data on the reasons people use the Capital Connection? If so, then a pie graph could be useful here. X% use it to commute to work, Y% for personal travel, etc. For the commuters, people will have to quit their jobs, move (closer) to Wellington, or commute which will probably end up being by car. This is an economic lifeline which is being cut. People make an effort for themselves but get knocked back by this government. Then that leads into a discussion about sustainability (more fuel use, more pollution), congestion (more cars on roads, not enough parking space in Waikanae) etc.
