Hi Iain,
First time writer who was overwelmed to make comment on tonights TV1 news article about the Defence Force. On behalf of the lowly soldier, THANK YOU. Over the past 10 months I have seen the job that I have loved for over 20 years fall victim to greed from senior leaders within the organisation. I too will be departing the service at my own will, however, feel for my friends and my subordinates who stay on. I would be more than happy to discuss issues with you about this topic, however, due to employment circumstances would like to remain anonymous. Thanks again

“Would you prefer to sell down 49% of selected state assets, or increased taxation including a capital gains tax?” – That was the question we were asked at the election.

The election wasn’t a yes/no on National’s policy – Labour and the other parties had to offer a viable alternative, too.

Most people will have gone on leave on the 23rd, and by the looks of the traffic heading into Wellington, only returned to work on the 16th. That team should have been able to answer at least one of the questions presented, especially the one about the estimate to fix, considering someone has already released an estimate of $10m

The Gorge highway is key to supporting the exports from Palmerston North’s distribution and manufacturing industry that it’s economy so heavily relies on.

The cost to the local economy is in the thousands per day.

Is it worth keeping the Gorge road open?

Nothing I’ve seen so far would indicate that it is as the only way to ensure that things like that slip don’t happen again is by cutting back the cliffs and that ain’t going to happen.

This may be no earthquake but this Gorge closure is hurting people and business. During the campaign the government said they would give some more attention to the Gorge.

Perhaps these questions could be followed up with oral questions when the House meets again.

There is a cut off date for getting questions in and extra time is given over the summer break to allow for leave etc. The Minister has responsibility for determining what is a priority and for answering the questions. He has staff to do the donkey work, but the responsibility lies with him. These were not hard questions to answer. Simply a matter of colating information that really already should be at hand if the Manawatu Gorge closure is being given any sort of priority in his office. Clearly it isn’t.

That’s a bit pat when, as a politician, you know that these answers are provided by Ministry Staff. Clearly those staff haven’t been back at work to answer the questions before the required deadline. Nice that you submitted them four days before xmas – probably knowing that most staff would be on leave and not able to provide the Minister with an answer.
